LAX — Next Generation Airport Terminal

—Spring 2013
The goal of this collaboration was to re-invent the passenger experience of the terminal in order to bring back the romance, magic, and wonder of travel.

The evolution of “Night Stars”

In February of 2013, Katie moved to a small town in central Alaska for a creative sabbatical. It would turn into a fitting project of nightly aurora chases, seeking light pillars and star trails. She was commissioned to create a 12 minute capsule formatted for each of the main media features based on her studies. As Bradley West Terminal moves into a quieter period of the daily cycle, “Night Stars” brings a cross-section of the universe inside its walls, using trompe l’oeil effects to create a sense of deep space filled with slowly drifting stars, comets, and nebulae. In tandem, she developed animation for real-time particle systems that would be triggered by proximity sensors.

After weeks of working remotely in The Last Frontier, she moved onsite to join the the LAX team for a month of integration, assisting on all of the other capsule productions and finishing installation in time for the Grand Gala and the public debut.
